London
London er hovedstaden i England og Storbrittannien. Det er en af de største byer i Europa. Byen er samtidig et af de vigtigste finans- og handelscentrer i verden.
Historie
Oprindelig var London en keltisk by, grundlagt af romerne, der kaldte byen Londinium og brugte den som havneby ved Themsen. Themsen skærer gennem byen og deler den i nord og syd. I dag kan Themsen krydses ved mange tunneler og broer, hvoraf den berømteste er Tower Bridge.
London blev i 1664-66 hærget af et voldsomt udbrud af pest, som krævede mere end 100.000 dødsofre. Pesten blev i 1666 efterfulgt af en storbrand, som ødelagde cirka 10% af byen.
Borgmesteren i London er Ken Livingstone. Indbyggerne i byen når op på et tal over 7.172.000 mennesker. I 2001 blev de etniske grupper talt til følgende: 71% hvide, 10% indere eller pakistanere, 5% sorte afrikanere. 5% sorte caribianere, 3% blandede racer og 1% kinesere. Den største religiøse gruppe er de kristne (58%) og dem uden en religion (16%).
I London findes 5 lufthavne: London City Airport, Heathrow, Biggin Hill, Kenley Aerodrome og Northolt. Den offentlige transport i London foregår i stor udstrækning med undergrundsbanen, the London Underground, også kaldet "the Tube", de røde dobbeltdækkerbusser er også almindelige i gadebilledet, sammen med de sorte taxier.
Havnen er også en af verdens største med en samlet længde på mere end 75 kilometer.
